Why you can’t be the next Copyblogger

by Margie Clayman

Up until I was in college, I was a huge fan of soap operas. As I got older I got (sadly) more interested in the stories and in the characters. Especially all of those 6-pack abs. Hem. Anyway…on a soap opera, there is a lot of actor turn-over, so you’d tune in one day and you’d hear this voice come on saying, “The role of Cassanova Villanova Smith is now being played by…” and the new actor’s name would be given. The characters were always completely ignorant of the voice and of the fact that their son/brother/lover/father looked completely different. But you knew that it was somebody new.

I think a lot of people in Social Media approach the online world as if they can step in to the shoes of someone like Brian Clark, Darren Rouse, Guy Kawasaki, or Chris Brogan and have a voice come on saying, “Now playing the role of…” However, there is a fact that is being overlooked.

Times have changed.

How Engagement Can Make You Money

by Margie Clayman

A few weeks ago, you decided to make a really nice dinner for the family. One of the dishes was broccoli smothered in cheese. After eating the deliciousness, you help clean up the kitchen. Somehow you get stuck with the cutting board that you cut up the broccoli on, and all of these teeny teeny tiny green “broccoli boogers” are clinging to that board for dear life. Suddenly, you get an idea for a small, easy tool that would easily pick up those little pieces of broccoli flower.

You decide, after getting this BPU (broccoli picker-upper) just right that you are going to try to sell it. Now, there are two ways you can do this. You can go to all of your friends, all of your neighbors, and anyone you meet on the street and do your sales pitch, or you can try to find people who might really be looking for a BPU. Let’s face it – not everyone likes broccoli, even if it is smothered in cheese.

A crouton is just stale bread

by Margie Clayman

Who created the first crouton? How did that happen? When you really think about it, a crouton is nothing more than bread gone bad. How did someone figure out that you could make bad bread into croutons? Did a piece of stale bread fall into their salad? Did they get tired of throwing out bread that wasn’t moldy, just hard?

What is the difference between the person who tosses bad bread out and the person who says, “Wait – I’m going to add some spice and sell this to people so they can have something crunchy and slightly unhealthy in their salads?”

Which person are you?

Ten ways to grow your online presence that I ignore

by Margie Clayman

When you first start getting involved in Twitter and the blogosphere, it’s kind of like going to a new place for the first time. Everything is bright and shiny and new and exciting. It seems like everyone talks about “giving to get.” People who write really good stuff get the credit. It’s all a Polyanna could wish for.

As you stick with it longer, you start to see that people who have a lot of Twitter followers or a lot of blog activity tend to have a lot of tricks up their sleeves. Actually, it’s kind of easy to learn about a lot of those tricks because people write about them on their blogs. I’ve come to recognize 10 ways that people seem to use successfully on a regular basis to grow their Social Media presence.

My problem is that personally, I don’t like doing any of them. That doesn’t mean they’re wrong. It just means they’re out of my comfort zone. Here are those ten ways I’m talking about.

Why are you hiding

by Margie Clayman

When I was in fifth grade, I won the chance to speak at a huge event for DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education). When I walked up to the podium, the microphone was up above my head. My mom said that everyone could hear me perfectly, but no one could really see me, so the effect was kind of like a disembodied voice was floating through the gym.

I think that’s kind of how you might be feeling with your Social Media presence. Your tweets are out there. Your blog posts are out there. Are you out there?

Women and Social Media: Heidi’s Post is Live!

by Margie Clayman

It’s Thursday, which means it’s time for another fantastic contribution to the Women and Social Media Series!

This week, Heidi Cohen tackles women and how they interact on Facebook. The post is called On Facebook, Women Just Want to Have Fun. Heidi backs her post up, as per usual, with wonderful analysis and statistics, but could this perspective on women and social media undermine women who aren’t online just to have fine? Great fodder for conversation!

Here is an overview of the series, and please give a visit to the following posts:
