Women and Social Media: Dawn’s Post is Live

by Margie Clayman

We’ve been talking about gender and how it intersects with Social Media for awhile now. We’ve talked about whether women keep each other down. We’ve talked about whether women use Social Media to socialize more, and whether women are more supportive while men are more promotional. What if what we have really been talking about is labels, though? In today’s contribution to this series, Dawn Westerberg argues that the only label you have is the one you choose.

For the rest of the series so far:

Here is an overview of the series, and please give a visit to the following posts:

Will you help me help Big Love Little Hearts?

by Margie Clayman

There is an organization called Big Love, Little Hearts. Founded by the amazing Estrella Rosenberg, Big Love Little Hearts does two things, really. First, it helps educate people around the world about heart defects that can take the lives of children. Many of these defects can be corrected if noticed in time. The second thing the organization does is help match children of limited means to organizations that can help fund their surgeries.

But actually, there’s a third thing Estrella and her organization does, too. It provides a community for the parents of all of these children. Can you comprehend a child going through heart surgery at six months old?

No, me neither.

The past few hours have been the most tragic in the history of the organization. Five little ones have passed away over the last several hours.

While money will not bring these children back, we can help donate so that more children can get help, and so that the Big Love Little Hearts organization knows we have their backs.

I’m asking one simple question.

Can we get 500 people to donate $10 this week in honor of the five children who passed away?

All you have to do is visit the Big Love Little Hearts site, and click donate.

I would consider it a huge personal favor, and I think we could also really make a difference.

Thank you for caring and sharing.

Why bother helping Japan?

by Margie Clayman

Three weeks ago, a conversation happened during #Tweetdiner, the weekly chat that I started with Stan Smith. The conversation focused on what we could do to help Japan. Three weeks later, we have a website, a Facebook page, and a registered Twitter hashtag at #care4Japan, and tomorrow begins a week-long Twitter chat that will hopefully raise awareness and drive donations to the American Red Cross.

Some people say, in response to these efforts, that Japan doesn’t really need our help. They’re a wealthy country. They can self-sustain.

You don’t need to wait to change the world

by Margie Clayman

A few days ago, my friend Cai Palmiter (@CaiPalmiter) helped me promote our #care4Japan effort on Facebook. She did so by referencing a quote from Anne Frank:

“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.”

If Anne Frank had been allowed to stay with us in this plane of existence, she would have been turning 82 this year. Her words come down to us as she wrote them while hiding from Nazis. Imagine what she would have thought of things like Twitter and Facebook! Imagine her desire to save the world flourishing with the speed of the internet.

Cai’s quote was well chosen.

Care For Japan

by Margie Clayman

At #tweetdiner tonight, we hashed out plans for an online initiative to help Japan. So far, this is our plan:

We will create a website that will offer links to a few charitable organizations helping Japan. These links will go to donation forms on those respective sites. Ideally, we’ll have a bar graph or some way to track our donations.

Our web committee as of now consists of @myagenda, @oziomedia, @grit08, and @judiknight. Thank you!!

We will have a week-long Twitter chat to drive traffic to the website. The hashtag will be #care4Japan. The site will post general themes and questions for each day to keep the conversation flowing. We will post YouTube videos of missing persons in Japan once every hour.

We will be looking for sponsors willing to match our donation amounts. Donations of prizes for participants will also be super-appreciated. As of now, @SMSJoe will be working on this, but I’d like to get him plenty of help.

Promotion of the week-long event will begin a week from today (3/26) and will last until the chat officially begins on April 2. The chat will end on Saturday, April 9th. We will announce the final tallies at #tweetdiner that night.

If you wish to help or have any other ideas, please leave a comment here and help spread the word.

Thank you!!!

Help for Japan – change in plans

by Margie Clayman

Yesterday, I saw a post by Oliver Blanchard called The Occasional Ugliness of the Social Web. Blanchard details how many people in the online world are saying that the tragedy in Japan is warranted because they should be punished for Pearl Harbor.

Think about that for a moment.

In hearing about this, and in talking to friends, I was advised that maybe silence is not the best answer. Maybe making our voices heard and our wallets open is the way to go. So here is my idea.

The American Red Cross has set up a causes page for Japan. This morning, they had about 1,750 promoters. I’d like to get that number up to 20,000 people. Not all of it will be from us, but we can at least help spread the word.

Can we see them reach that goal by Friday?

Let’s try it. Let’s prove that not everyone is using Social Media to spread filth, hatred, and bigotry. Just the opposite, in fact.

Are you with me?
