Care For Japan

March 19, 2011 by Margie Clayman 17 Comments

At #tweetdiner tonight, we hashed out plans for an online initiative to help Japan. So far, this is our plan:

We will create a website that will offer links to a few charitable organizations helping Japan. These links will go to donation forms on those respective sites. Ideally, we’ll have a bar graph or some way to track our donations.

Our web committee as of now consists of @myagenda, @oziomedia, @grit08, and @judiknight. Thank you!!

We will have a week-long Twitter chat to drive traffic to the website. The hashtag will be #care4Japan. The site will post general themes and questions for each day to keep the conversation flowing. We will post YouTube videos of missing persons in Japan once every hour.

We will be looking for sponsors willing to match our donation amounts. Donations of prizes for participants will also be super-appreciated. As of now, @SMSJoe will be working on this, but I’d like to get him plenty of help.

Promotion of the week-long event will begin a week from today (3/26) and will last until the chat officially begins on April 2. The chat will end on Saturday, April 9th. We will announce the final tallies at #tweetdiner that night.

If you wish to help or have any other ideas, please leave a comment here and help spread the word.

Thank you!!!

There’s one thing I’ve learned, and that is never to let momentum go when planning a project 🙂

Excited to be working all of you on this effort to help with the crisis in Japan.

Before we get going, I have some questions about the website
    1. Are we asking for donations of money? If so how are we doing this? Someone would have to have a 5013c or if someone collected money they would be liable for taxes on the money collected.
    2. Does anyone have access to GPL photos of Japan for the front of the site? I’d like them about 850 pixels wide and with landscape orientation.
    3. Are we going to make a Facebook page? I can make all blog posts automatically post to it.
    4. Anyone want to do a logo for Care 4 Japan?
5 Can someone write an about page?
    6. Can someone make a twitter account and manage it?

Those are just some questions I was thinking we need to address before we can get too far down the road.

We can do some of the content for the site as we discussed during the chat. If you need an About page or any other information just Tweet me the details. Thanks!

      Great questions Judi!

I don’t think we’re going to do donations on our site – we’re just going to link to donation forms for other organizations.

I don’t think we need a logo in this instance – it’s more a passing campaign, and the hashtag kind of serves as a logo in this kind of thing.

Think of this more as a landing page than a full site. We don’t need multiple pages probably, just a place to drive people from the Twitter chat so that we can drive donations.

Not sure about the images – I would check iStock and see if anyone has uploaded photos there yet.

      Thanks Judi!

        Margie, & Committee:
        • Agree, we should not do “collections” on this site. Just have the ability to direct traffic to sites such as Red Cross for donations, etc.
        • No logo needed, just yet- but we can create one if needed.
        • We do need several pages (not too elaborate) but distinctive, such as
        • Home (tells the story of the cause, Japan)
        • About Us (tells the story of Tweetdiner and it’s people effort to help Japan)
        • Sponsor Page (we have to promote vendors that are helping)
        • How to help (list of ways people can help – or list of needs)
        • Make a Difference ( Place where people can see the results of our efforts – success stories)

These pages are suggestions, but needs to be structure in a similar way ..

        thoughts?

A page that would allow others to leave comments or post information about missing people in Japan or where to go to post such information would be helpful. This could be part of the crowd-sourcing aspect that we discussed yesterday.

The site is up and functioning. Still needs some tweaking by me but all in all ready for content. We need:
    1. blurbage for the front page about use. I started a couple of sentences but someone should do it right.
    2) Tagline for the right of the logo.
    3) About page with photo. Maybe include twitter profile pics #tweetdiner peeps.
    4) Photos from creative commons sources of the disaster. There are some Flickr groups like Pray and donate for Japan that have some interesting photos.
    5) Whose info should I put for contact form page? Margie?
