Daria Giron posed a great question for my August series (or should I say OUR August series). She wanted to know my take on why we blog.
I’ve been thinking about this question for the whole month. And you know what? I still don’t have a great answer. I can tell you some of the reasons that I blog, but it would not be a comprehensive list. So I’ll tell you some of those things, but then you fill in the blank too.
I blog because…
I love to write
I love conversing with great people like you
It affords me the opportunity to deepen relationships with people I’ve met on other social platforms – no character limit, deeper conversations…it’s good stuff!
It allows me to chart how I grow and change as a thinker and as a writer
It allows me to weigh my thoughts against those of others
And hey, in this crazy world, let’s face it, it’s nice to be able to talk without noise, without interruption, in a free-flowing place that is your own, but where people can visit and talk to you all of the time. Where else can you *really* do that?
You blog because…
That’s just one person’s answer – namely mine. But I think to truly answer Daria’s question, you need to weigh in. Why do you, yes you, like to blog? Do you like to blog? Do you feel it’s an obligation or is it something fun you do? If you don’t blog, why don’t you?
Write this post with me, won’t you?

I blog for the exact same reasons that you do. Additionally, I blog because writing holds me accountable for making my life the best that I can make it. But most importantly, I blog because I have information and encouragement to share with you and others. Thanks for asking.
Those are great reasons. Thanks for adding to the conversation!
I blog because:
I love to write
People tell me they like what I have to say, and benefit from it
I love to write
I love to share, and in the sharing, I hope to inspire, educate, inform and entertain
I love to write:))))))
Cheers! Kaarina
I just wish I knew if you like writing….:) Thanks Kaarina, as always!
I blog as a vehicle for engaging a conversation I would not normally have. I get to choose the topic and have the 1st say. Whether the aforementioned is a reason that stands alone or is a companion to blogging to build online presence/brand I am unsure. Since both can also contribute to growing a network I don’t know if I blog for 1,2,3 or maybe more unspoken reasons. But that’s why I blog.
Sounds like you had the same problem I did in terms of narrowing it down to one answer, but I like your thought process. Thanks Barry!
I mainly blog for my company, but I still enjoy every minute of it. I agree with all of your reasons but mainly I love the frame of mind it puts me in. I feel the best when writing because my creativity is free flowing and I am learning so much. As the person informing others of new topics or business best practices I have to know exactly what I’m talking about, so it turns into a great learning/growing experience! Thanks for your post!
Great to hear that you enjoy it so much, Shannon. What could be better than “having” to do something you love doing?
I blog because I have a weird inner drive to teach others.
I also blog because it’s a journal about what life has taught me.
And finally, I blog because I was prompted to do it. And at this point in my life, I’ve learned to follow my promptings.
Marcus
I’ll have to thank whomever prompted you. You do indeed teach a lot of people a lot of great stuff!
I blog because I love to write. Blogging also provides me with an often much needed outlet and a way to share my thoughts & feelings with others and them with me as well! 🙂
Well said, Courtney. I like that answer!
I blog to build my online portfolio. With a degree in Graphic Design I’m used to having to prove myself, especially digitally. Now being a social media professional I knew that I needed to start blogging because a company who is using social media, whether they have a blog or not, would most likely not hire someone with no experience in blogging.
It’s also helped me improve my writing skills, and get my message out there. If anyone is thinking about joining the blogging train I would suggest commenting on blogs first to get your feet wet. I wrote a post on a few ways to help: http://bit.ly/omVouK.
That’s interesting, Jennifer. So you feel blogging is an integral part of an online portfolio…I wonder if there are dissenting views, and if so, what they might feel the “one” most important platform is.
Thanks for sharing!
I hate to appear self-centered or selfish, but I blog purely for the money and fame. It’s a little annoying because it has become increasingly difficult to go out in public these days, but with all the money I have now I can just bring the ‘public’ to me, huh?
Truthfully, I got into blogging as an afterthought; I started with commenting and engaging and thought you needed the blog to legitimize yourself. I might have said this to you before, but my expectations were so low there was a reason I chose the invisible moniker. I had no idea people would be showing up.
I do like to write, converse, interact and blogging has given me more reason to do so. I get frustrated at times because I don’t think I’ve worked hard enough to bring much depth to my writings, but as Danny Brown talked about in Michael Schecter’s post, it’s all about practice. This is a journey we are on and not necessarily looking for a final destination. We will always have room to grow.
That’s my story for today; at least for now and I’m sticking with it.
I blog so that I will have an excuse to go to Happy Hour and write about it!!! 🙂 (and all the other reasons you stated!)
