A crouton is just stale bread

by Margie Clayman

Who created the first crouton? How did that happen? When you really think about it, a crouton is nothing more than bread gone bad. How did someone figure out that you could make bad bread into croutons? Did a piece of stale bread fall into their salad? Did they get tired of throwing out bread that wasn’t moldy, just hard?

What is the difference between the person who tosses bad bread out and the person who says, “Wait – I’m going to add some spice and sell this to people so they can have something crunchy and slightly unhealthy in their salads?”

Which person are you?
