How do you define a “great” blogger?

December 5, 2010 by Margie Clayman 6 Comments

There are people in the Social Media space whom we call “great bloggers.” How do you define those people? What traits do they have?

Is it telling a story, as Brian Clark discussed this past week?

Maybe you judge a blogger in a more monetary fashion. Maybe you’d look for someone who would follow the advice from ProBlogger on how to make money blogging.

Maybe you judge a blogger based on his or her passion, as Stanford writes in his post Why You Shouldn’t Just Blog For Yourself.

How do YOU define a great blogger? Is it one of these traits? A mixture? Or is it something else? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

I’m most interested in content that can help me as a marketer; much less in someone else’s volume of online sales; and hardly at all in another’s desire to express his or her deepest thoughts (although I respect and admire serious writers). Given my interests, a great blogger is one who consistently posts useful tips; cool research findings; new ideas; and fresh interpretations of old ideas. If it’s done with humor and a minimum of self promotion, all the better. If it’s clearly written, that’s better still.

    Margie,

I think you’ll find we all define them a bit differently, depending on where we’re at in our career and in our life.

When I think about a great blog post it’s part applicable business lesson mixed with life experience, part solid numbers and examples mixed with depth, or sometimes it’s just a heaping dose of inspiration mixed with soul on a day when I might feel lacking in both.

A blogger who provides a mixture of these is someone who stands out, to me, as truly great.

    Thanks for asking, 🙂

I guess my definition is a little different from the two above. I define a great blogger as one who builds a great community. By community, I am not talking about a bunch of people trying to be “first” to post a comment, or a bunch of pats on the back and “job-well-done” nonsense. If it is someone who I can meet wherever they are and begin to walk along side with them and their readers, that is how I define a great blogger.

How do YOU define a good blogger? You never said…

haha 🙂 I think I look at a wide variety of things – the monetary aspect doesn’t matter to me that much, I have to say.

    Thanks for your response!
